Because of the strong death magics used by the denizens, the civilized parts of Necromantia seem to be in a perpetual state of decay. Newly built buildings quickly grow mold in the stonework, anything made of wood, even houses warp and dry rot within days of having been erected. Clothing eventually looks eaten by moths. Constructs arent the only things that are permeated by these magics. Even humans of Necromantia take on a pallid humor as though they are dead. Very little grows around the areas surrounding Thanatos; and fresh fruits and vegetables that are imported cannot be preserved easily unless jarred or canned.
Thanatos is the largest and most expansive city of Necromantia. Most of it was rebuilt when Makatula came to rule. Even before then, Thanatos was a morbidly beautiful place. The old cathedral-like temples of Entropis still stand (the goddess that the majority of Necromantia follows) bearing ironworkings of skeletal or corpse torsos with their arms outstretched in mock ecstasy of death. Some of the denizens still tell tales that these profane steeples were sacrifices burned alive in molten lava to appease Entropis. This rumor is unfounded, but it is well-known that sacrifices once occurred regularly in this grim city. The cobblestone streets mixed with human remains still represent this truth. Things are more calmed since the arrival of Makatula. Sacrifices arent as openly made and people arent nearly as grim as they once where. The city isnt nearly as brutal and savage either, especially since the formation of the Council of Five and creation of the banshees.
